CS for Winter Break

Are you starting to feel that “winter break is coming” energy?  Put it to good use and show your students the vast world of computer science that awaits them! Use these as standalone activities, or assign them as exciting challenges to complete over winter break. Either way, these Winter Break activities will have students begging for more computer science!

Target Audience: K-12

Potentially how + when you would use this in your classroom:

  • Assign the CS for Winter Break Tic-Tac-Toe sheet to students for as a winter break choice board of computer science activities.
  • Use these activities for time between finals, assemblies. Or if you have you closed the gradebook for the semester, have a fun CS for Winter Break Class!
  • Get class settled each day, or keep them focused by using these CS for Winter Break activities as bell ringers or exit tickets.

  • Activity 1: micro:bit Jingle Bells – In this activity, students will use the speaker function of the micro:bit to code the micro:bit to play a holiday tune.
  • Activity 2: CS for Winter Tic-Tac-Toe – Celebrate the holidays with a computer science twist! This tic-tac-toe worksheet offers a grid of holiday-themed coding and tech challenges at various difficulty levels. Choose any three activities to complete a row, column, or diagonal and showcase your creativity and skills!
  • Activity 3: Autonomous Snow Plow System – In this activity, students will be introduced to machine learning in the real world of autonomous vehicles, specifically a snow plow.
  • Activity 4: Code.org Design a Snowflake – In this lesson, students will apply their skills with nested loops as they go through a series of code.org exercises to create snowflake images using characters from the Frozen movies.
  • Activity 5: Binary Candy Cane – In this activity students will code their name in binary as a decorative holiday candy cane.
