CS for Valentine’s Day

In this byte, you will find specific activities that you can use for Valentine’s Day (or adapt to other holidays or events) in your K-12 classroom. These activities transform traditional Valentine crafts and games into opportunities for students to practice pattern recognition, sequencing, and basic coding concepts, all while maintaining the fun and creativity that makes Valentine’s Day special for learners.

The CS Bytes for Valentine’s day include 3 lessons (two plugged with micro:bits and Code.org & one unplugged), a recorded webinar explaining the concepts in the byte if you are an auditory learner, and other materials and resources for Valentine’s Day from sources around the web. Use these activities to help you organize an activity for Valentine’s Day. Feel free to adapt these resources to your needs and get creative!

  • Activity 1 (Grades K-12): micro:bit flashing hearts (and other V-Day animations) – This resource is an activity using micro:bits (actual physical devices or the digital simulator) to have students create digital Valentine’s messages.
  • Activity 2 (Grades K-12): Decoding Binary Valentines – This activity teaches  students how to convert Valentine’s messages into binary code transforms a familiar holiday activity into an engaging introduction to how computers communicate.
  • Activity 3 (Grades K-12): Digital Interactive Valentine’s Cards – This activity introduces students to programming concepts though creating interactive digital Valentine’s cards.
