If you’re truly preparing kids for the future, computer science has to be part of it.
That’s why, when the only computer science class NorthWood High School students could take was dropped from the curriculum, my reaction was, “This can’t be!”
I was devastated – not for myself, but my students.
From my own background in data management and business operations, I know that computer science will play a part in whatever future students decide on.
It’s not just about teaching kids to code. Think of it this way: Every student gets four years of math, but how many go to college to become mathematicians? But math is important; we use it daily. Computer science is the same today. No matter what career a student chooses, they’ll need the kind of training you get only from computer science classes.
Thankfully, we’d recently learned about Nextech … and their amazing programs helped us save computer science education for our students.
Back when I started teaching, I wasn’t trained in computer science. I’d taken one programming class in college, but that was a long time ago. Nextech taught me how to teach computer science.
They gave all of us access to so much expertise and resources. I learned the principles of computer science, how to craft lesson plans, how to guide my students in experimenting with technology and becoming citizens of the web … in essence, all the background I needed to empower kids in computer science.
Bringing Nextech in as a partner was the best thing that ever happened to our computer science program.
I’m still the only computer science teacher. Yet, we now have three separate sections of AP-based classes, two sections with Code.org, even advanced AP classes and Microsoft certifications. Believe me when I say there is absolutely no way we’d have all this without Nextech.
Through December 31, 2020, Lilly Endowment Inc. will match your gift dollar for dollar, bringing twice as much computer science education to teachers and students.
