Help students of all ages explore the field of data science through these hands-on, unplugged activities. Through these activities, teachers will introduce fundamental data science concepts, foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and push students to question their data.
Target Audience: K-12
What’s included:
- Activity 1 (Grades K-12): ELA and Data Science – Learn how to use these two wonderful children’s data science books to bring difficult concepts to life for your students. Each book includes guided reading pages as well as grade-level appropriate worksheets as well as generic resources to use for all other potential reading.
- Activity 2 (Grades K-12): Sorting Algorithms with Cards – Help students understand the vast world of sorting and searching algorithms through this tangible card deck that makes executing and practicing the algorithms engaging for all grade levels.
- Activity 3 (Grades K-12): Data Science Dice – These seven Data Science Dice (or numbered cards to be used with regular dice) were designed to engage students creatively and confidently with data. Whether students don’t know how to begin or are stuck debating how to present their findings, the dice offer solutions to keep students moving forward. The dice are intended to help students (and teachers) with ideas or suggestions on how to use, generate, or evaluate their data. Each roll is a new experience! They’re a playful, hands-on way to make data science approachable and fun.
Dice Types:
- Orange & Teal: Different Data Visualizations – These are a variety of graphs and charts as images
- White: Ways to Collect Data – Different ways students can record the data they collect
- Blue: Steps of Data Analysis – Can help assign roles in a group
- Yellow: Ways to Analyze the Data – Suggestion on how to try and analyze the data
- Green: Mathematical Analysis – Mathematical ways to analyze numerical data
- Black: Data Collection Suggestions – Ideas for students struggling with what type of data to collect
