Exploring Physical Computing with the micro:bit for K-2

Are you looking to introduce your early elementary learners to the BBC micro:bit? This K–2 micro:bit activity set builds early computer science awareness through age-appropriate, engaging experiences that introduce foundational vocabulary, reinforce fine motor and letter skills, and spark curiosity about physical computing.

Target Audience: K-2

What’s Included

  • Activity 1 (Grades K-2): Hardware, Software, and the BBC micro:bit – Introduce K–2 students to the terms hardware and software with a read-aloud. Provide hands-on reinforcement of the new vocabulary with a classroom scavenger hunt, followed by an exploration of the physical features of the BBC micro:bit, and wrap up with a fun micro:bit coloring activity.
  • Activity 2 (Grade K-2): My BBC micro:bit A-Z minibook – This minibook provides a list of A-Z pictures and related micro:bit terms in a fun way to give students a visual example, letter recognition, tracing practice, and fine motor skill practice. Use this minibook one page at a time, or all at once.
  • Activity 3 (Grade K-2): Meet Your micro:bit  – In this first “plugged” lesson, students explore the BBC micro:bit’s built-in features using its pre-loaded “Meet Your micro:bit” program as a hands-on introduction to buttons, LEDs, and sensors.
  • Activity 4 (Grade 2): Code.org micro:bit Maker Grade 2 – Bring hands-on technology learning to Computer Science with the code.org Maker course, designed around the micro:bit physical computing device. This course bridges the gap between digital and physical worlds, enabling students to transfer their computer programs into real-world applications with the micro:bit. Students will learn fundamental coding principles such as sequencing, loops, conditional logic, and event handling, and they will gain practical experience in how hardware and software can work together.
  • Activity 5 (Grade K-2): Teacher Wearable Animations – Explore ready-to-use micro:bit animation files and tips for showcasing device features in K–2 classrooms to build excitement and early tech awareness.
