This CS Bytes introduces K-8 students to the BBC micro:bit, a pocket-sized computer that introduces students to physical computing. The activities included in this CS Byte will help you learn how to set your K-8 classrooms set-up for success with some entry-level activities to ensure a successful roll-out of the BBC micro:bit, including exploring and coding your first program using the Microsoft MakeCode platform.

What’s Included
- Activity 1 (Grades 4-8): Introducing the BBC micro:bit – Students will be introduced to physical hardware of the micro:bit and sensors, identifying opportunities for input and outputs.
- Activity 2 (Grades 4-8): Meet Your micro:bit – This activity is intended to be the first “plugged” lesson of the micro:bit, helping students explore built-in features, such as buttons, LEDs, and sensors.
- Activity 3 (Grades 4-8): Introduction to MakeCode -Microsoft MakeCode is an environment that students will use to create programs that the micro:bit can understand in any of three different computer languages, Blocks, JavaScript and Python. This activity is intended to be the first look at the MakeCode platform.
- Activity 4 (Grades K-12): micro:bit flashing hearts animation – Students use micro:bits (actual physical devices or the digital simulator) to create digital heart animation.
