Partners Inspire #whatsnext

August 19th, 2016

Meeting everyday needs of individuals and businesses at local and global levels is increasingly dependent on universal access to technology of all kinds. Developing and maintaining this essential and rapidly evolving technology requires a highly trained and specialized workforce. In recent years, Central Indiana has seen meteoric growth in computer and IT-related jobs. Between 2009 and 2014, there was a 17 percent increase in jobs with titles including software developer, web developer, computer programmer and computer system analyst. That equates to more than 5,000 qualified individuals added to the tech sector’s workforce.

For this trajectory to continue, which is something we all want, we must focus today on developing the talent to satisfy current workforce demands, and also be mindful of developing the pipeline to satisfy projected needs. Unfortunately, while workforce needs continue to grow, thousands of Hoosier youth lack access to opportunities that can create interest and develop skill sets necessary to fuel their path toward long-term success as part of our growing tech community.

This is why Nextech exists…to transform today’s K-12 students from merely being consumers of technology to being this community’s next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and tech giants.

We have accomplished much through our key programs in a relatively short time. More than 70 teachers will introduce 2,500+ Indiana middle and high school students to computer science this school year thanks to Nextech’s K-12 professional development program. As part of our annual celebration of Computer Science Education week, an estimated 1,000 students will be inspired to view technology in an entirely new light. Through the Nextech Catapult program, several high school students have been thrown into the deep end of Indy’s thriving tech community to learn just how powerful a swimmer they are.

Although successful, this work barely scratches the surface of the impact Nextech can make.
Backed by momentum with educators, student motivation and relationships with leading nonprofits in the community, the time is ripe for Nextech to expand its efforts.

Nextech cannot turn this vision into a reality on our own. We need financial investments from organization’s who share our passion and understand the need to fuel the next generation of tech talent.
