“I’m just trying to reach my students, make sure they’re able to understand the material, and prepare them for the future.” ~ Julie Alano, Mira Awards Tech Educator of the Year, Hamilton Southeastern High School
Think outside the box. Try new things. Take risks. Be creative. Come up with new solutions. Discover along with your students.
These are the innovative teaching philosophies Hamilton Southeastern High School teacher, Julie Alano, incorporates into her computer science classroom every day. Alano understands that computer science skills set students up for success both in school… and in life.
And that’s just one of the many reasons she was recently named the Mira Awards Tech Educator of the Year.
Twenty years ago, Alano began her career at Hamilton Southeastern High School as a math teacher. In her second year at HSE, she took on computer science courses, and HSE’s computer science program has never been the same. Under Alano’s leadership and guidance, the high school now offers four levels of computer science, and CS education has been built into the K-8 curriculum. Alano leads the movement as the chair of the of the Digital Age Information Technology Academy and the Applied Science Department. In 2016, she was named HSE District Teacher of the Year (out of 1,200+ employees!).
But Alano’s impact doesn’t stop inside the walls of HSE.
She is the founder and president of the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and has served as an Indiana representative and regional leader on the national Framework for K-12 Computer Science Education. She was also recognized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology for encouraging more young women to pursue tech careers.
The impact that’s nearest and dearest to our hearts, however, is that Alano partners with Nextech to provide Code.org professional development for CS courses and is only one of two Indiana facilitators for the AP Computer Science Principles course.
We are so pleased to have such a dedicated advocate partnering with us to help blaze a trail for CS and future tech pioneers.
Today, we raise our collective glasses to congratulate Julie Alano, Mira Awards Tech Educator of the Year. We’re beyond grateful to have you on our team, Julie!
