Get to know Catapult Sam

“Through Catapult, I’ve seen so many technologies, so many ideas, and people achieving everything from next to nothing, its been overall inspiring.”
School: Shortridge High School
Why did you get interested in coding and computer science?
Coding is the cursive of the future. Everyday more and more computers enter the market, and anything from toasters to quantum computers will all use coding (a different language for the quantum computer, similar idea). Knowing coding is a very handy skill, just like reading and writing to communicate with other people. Coding lets you communicate with a computer and tell it exactly what you want.
If you could invent something that would make life easier for people, what would you invent?
I would make either easy access space travel or living environments for making other planets habitable. Earth is only so large, and we need to look to the stars in order to expand.
If you could describe Catapult in one word, what would it be?
Mind-blowing (technically a compound word). I’ve seen so many technologies, so many ideas, and people achieving everything from next to nothing, its been overall inspiring. This is the first time I’ve really thought I have a shot at making my own company from the ground up and growing it to something world changing.
What is a cause you’re passionate about?
I am passionate about our rights as people and being able to express and be who we are.
How has Nextech helped you with your future plans?
I’ve always been interested in technology. From the beginning, my Dad started exposing me to great technologies, from keeping me updated on space travel to medical advancements, and I knew I wanted to make a difference too. I started thinking I would be an inventor, making world changing inventions and fixing problems near me, but now I have the bigger picture. I want to become an engineer, creating and innovating new products and systems to fix even the worlds biggest problems, and learning to code is one of the first few steps I have taken toward this.
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
Time travel (if I could do it without imploding the universe) because I could see and meet anyone in the world, experience every event, and help keep humanity on the right track.
Do you have any hobbies?
I like to build simple machines and different mini DIY projects in my free time.
How would you describe Catapult to a stranger?
The Catapult program is just an experience itself. We call it an internship, but you’re paid to have fun and learn about the tech community, your world. Before I went into it, I didn’t know anything about the Indy tech community. I mean we’re in Indiana. We do corn and soy beans. In Indianapolis, on the Monument itself there’s five or six tech companies just starting up. Catapult helped me make real connections to tech leaders in our community.
