Meet Teacher Vickie

Vickie Houlihan is an experienced K-12 teacher, having been in the classroom for 12 years. Although she has taught several technology courses in the past (Infrastructure of the Internet, Networking I, Routers and Switches and Computer Security), Vickie is taking a new challenge for the 2017-18 school year – Computer Science. Vickie is participating in Nextech’s professional development to teach AP Computer Science Principles at Heartland Career Center.
In addition to a love for technology, Vickie enjoys weaving baskets and loves the 4th of July. Read below to learn more about our her.
Why do you think it is important for students to take Computer Science courses?
Technology is progressively the center the jobs of the future. If you want a stable, good paying job, you need to have a good foundation in Computer Science.
If you could correct one misconception about Computer Science, what would it be?
Computer Science doesn’t focus on Math.
What does CS for All mean to you?
There are many jobs in the computer science area for Accounting, Human Resources, Sales and Customer Service. No matter what field you are going to go into, you need to have a good Computer Science knowledge to be successful.
If you weren’t a teacher, what other career or job would you like to pursue and why?
Cyber Security, I enjoy catching individuals doing something they shouldn’t be doing.
Who was a favorite teacher of yours and why?
Mrs. Kramer, because she encouraged me to step out of my shell and be content with whom I am.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
The ability to fly, so I could escape visit the sand and crystal blue water.
What makes Nextech special?
They are willing to give back to the communities and enrich the lives of others.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
Fourth of July, watching all of the lights in the dark sky.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Hidden Figures. These women were in the background doing their jobs, but were not recognized for all of their knowledge and training. Sometime I like to be in the background doing the work and not being in the fame or the lime light.
What has been your favorite memory of working with Nextech?
The Externship enriched my life with simple Computer Science concepts to pass along to my students of tomorrow. It allowed me to connect with industries in Indianapolis to offer field trips for the students to see start up companies, data centers, and different careers in the computer science field.
