Meet Catapult Brenasia

September 1st, 2017

Why did you get interested in computer science?

I got interested in computer science because I thought it was amazing how you could type up a sentence and make something work. I didn’t understand it and I wanted to learn. Curiosity was really what made me do it.

List 3 words that describe you.

Optimistic, supportive and creative

What does it mean to you to be a girl in tech?

Being a girl in tech makes me feel proud. It makes me feel like I have to be the example for women around the world because I’m making a difference and I’m putting myself out there in a way that’s not common.

What has been your favorite experience as a Catapult?

Seeing the tech scene in Indianapolis. I was unaware of it beforehand so it was an amazing opportunity to see all the things and opportunities there are for me here.

I also liked seeing people like me and with backgrounds like me inside the tech field. It makes me feel as if I can do it also.

What’s the secret sauce of Catapult?

I believe that in this experience we’re all in this together. We’re all feeling the same things. We’re all having the same difficulties trying to produce our portfolios.  We’re all awkward and we don’t know each other so it kind of forces us to get to know each other and feel comfortable with people around us.

Throughout the summer, it was really fun to see how we progressed as a group and we all are so close knit now. It’s not only with us Catapults but the people around us and that’s an amazing feeling.

Tell us about a hobby or interest you have.

I like to plan and host events.

If you could invent something that would make life easier for people, what would you invent?

A teleporter.

What is one of the skills you’ve learned as part of the Catapult program?

I’ve learned the skill of presenting. I’ve had to present a lot and on things that I’m not necessarily sure about. So I believe that has helped push me to be more confident about the things that I’ve developed and, even though I might not think it’s great, I should present it as if it’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever made.

What does being a Catapult mean to you?

Launching yourself into new situations that you didn’t know about before in the field of tech.

What is a cause you’re passionate about?

I’m passionate about getting kids the opportunity to do things like Catapult.

How has Nextech helped you grow?

Nextech has most definitely made me come out of my box. It’s helped me become friends with people that I would never have talked to. It’s helped me put myself out there in situations that I don’t think I would have done before so, yes.

Catapult has also exposed me to different job opportunities that I didn’t know were there before.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I fake all the confidence that it might seem I have.
